Yep! Step by step

At the time of joining Yep! with CSW Group Liam had no qualifications, minimal work experience and a desire to join the police force. Liam came with enthusiasm to start on the project and to learn ways he might be able to help himself move forward.

Liam Worked with his Adviser Eileen who was there to offer guidance and support throughout his Yep! journey.

Behind the scenes, Liam was supported to gain his birth certificate, a provisional driving licence and open a bank account. This means that Liam now has multiple forms of ID for use in the future.

Liam’s next step was guided by Eileen; researching routes into policing, it was through this that he was able to see that he would require Maths and English qualifications. With his agreement, Eileen arranged assessments at the local Cornwall Adult Education Service Centre and supported Liam by taking him to this appointment. When he had completed his assessments, he signed up and started to regularly attend his classes.

A key qualification to have to progress into a role in public services is first aid, so Liam was also supported to complete a Level 3 qualification in Emergency First Aid at Work.  This was a significant moment for him, marking the gaining of his first formal qualification!

Eileen and Liam’s next step was to create an Indeed account and CV. Liam then used his CV to apply for a role with Devon and Cornwall Police as a PCSO. He was invited to take part in the assessment and was unsuccessful at this time, but this hasn’t put him off, and he will try again.

Eileens support continued, with Liam mentioning an interest in learning survival skills, Eileen tapped into another project partner, this time Newquay Orchard and their Bushcraft and Wellbeing course.  Liam was eager to join and start this course, however this involved a bus journey, and he had never independently travelled on a bus before. Eileen stepped in to offer travel training, showing him the process of getting the correct bus and how to use an app to aid with this, then Liam caught the bus independently with remote support and Eileen met him at the bus stop for Newquay Orchard. Liam will continue to make these bus journeys independently with a point of contact at Newquay Orchard remotely supporting him.

Many small steps towards Liam’s long-term goal have meant that he is now able to independently travel around Cornwall, he has a First Aid qualification, is on the road to achieving his Maths and English qualification, has a good CV and is clear about the route forward to achieve his long term goals.
