Michael Sharman, SMART SKILLS Adviser
I initially began my journey within the Skills sector on an Apprenticeship within a Further Education setting, I held the role of an Employer Engagement Adviser within the Business Engagement team which included working closely with businesses ranging from Micro – Large.
Most recently, I worked as a Business Skills Adviser with the Local Authority, I worked closely to form professional relationships with businesses and carried out Business Needs Analysis to identify skills gaps, working with the businesses to find training solutions.
I am delighted to be working on the SMART SKILLS programme. SMART SKILLS will help businesses right across the county up skill their employees and aid business growth. I look forward to developing professional working relationships with businesses right across Devon.

I started my career working for a local training provider and undertook several roles throughout my ten years there. I started as a MIS Assistant, followed by Recruitment Adviser and ended my last couple of years as Office/Marketing Manager. During this time, I made the most of the training available and completed a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Management, PTTLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) and CAVA (Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement) courses. These gave me a greater knowledge of the learner journey and allowed me to assess Apprentices on the job.
For the past six years, I followed my passion for Marketing as I love being creative, thinking outside of the box and was lucky enough to plan and attend international exhibitions across Europe.
I knew I would always be drawn back to the training world and this role within SMART SKILLS incorporates a little bit of everything I love. I’m most excited about networking and meeting new people as well as helping businesses navigate their way to the right fully funded courses to upskill their employees.
