SMART SKILLS Devon is delivered through our SMART Partners, City College Plymouth, Focus Training, Learn Devon, Petroc, South Devon College and the University of Exeter. SMART SKILLS Partners will offer a range of flexible training solutions from short courses through to full higher-level qualifications.
City College Plymouth are incredibly excited to launch a Digital Innovation Programme delivered flexibly around employer and learner needs and in response to local labour market requirements. The exciting delivery offer will include Digital Training Analysis, Google Application Masterclasses to support businesses in maximising Google’s full potential and much more.
Our delivery content will be employer-led, understanding skills gaps and working with employers to upskill their existing workforce, and to address a skills need with a view to upskilling locally unemployed individuals. The training delivery method can be anything from one-day intensive workshops through to ten-week flexible programmes; taster programmes, workshops, face-to-face, online and blended learning delivery to meet employer needs and individual learning styles.
The Focus Training Group
The Focus Training Group is initially planning to deliver two electrical qualifications: Electric Vehicle Charging and Installation of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems in response to local requirements. Both courses will be delivered at our centres in either Exeter or Plymouth.
As we move further into 2021, we will share our Arboriculture and Gas programme offers and will support potential participants to identify clear development pathways in these areas. Both programmes operate out of Newton Abbot and our Gas provision can also be accessed at Plymouth. As we continue our work with local employers and potential participants, we will look to expand our offer even further to ensure we are meeting the needs.
Through our work with local businesses and their employees, we will work together to identify appropriate development opportunities as well as determine how individuals can progress onto further learning opportunities.
As part of our programme learners will receive impartial advice on the options available to them through Learn Devon and where appropriate, outside of Learn Devon – including other delivery partners. This will support them in selecting the most valuable options for them from the essential employment skills offer. The courses and workshops will be tailored and in very small groups (approximately 4 learners per class) and we will be offering personalised learning programmes.
The essential employment skills offer – a mix of qualification and non-qualification courses and workshops that learners can freely choose from and participate in the ones they believe would have the most impact on their employment progression. The choice will include activities in the below topic areas as well as progression opportunities within each topic to enable their skills to be built up over time.
English and maths will include GCSEs, functional skills, Ascentis awards and modules focussed on tailored needs for specific employment opportunities such as using a scientific calculator or report writing.
Digital skills and IT courses will include essential digital skills qualifications including ITQ up to level 2, smaller Gateway qualifications and modules focused on specific employment opportunities. Examples include using Teams to collaborate at work and filing in digital forms.
Employability skills are likely to include courses and workshops focused on confidence building, health and safety at work, interview skills, identifying transferable skills and specific employer requested training.
English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) will include a mixture of qualification courses and non-qualification modules such as making telephone calls, completing applications and supporting children in school.

Petroc is one of the South West’s leading colleges committed to raising the aspirations, knowledge and skills of individuals, communities and businesses in Devon and beyond.
Through the SMART Skills project our aim is to deliver provision and activities that will improve workforce skills and support individuals yet to achieve a suitable qualification.

- Pathways for individuals to achieve higher level skills
Petroc also encourages employers, specifically SMEs to engage within the skills system through curriculum co-design and co-delivery to look at realistic and practical ways of achieving their desired outcomes.
We offer an extensive range of industry specific training courses that will support business development and growth. Courses can typically be delivered in house or at one of our North or Mid Devon campuses. We have also developed our digital delivery package and this is something that can also be developed upon request, if suitable.

South Devon College
outh Devon College is planning to deliver a suite of composites training in response to local demand, in which businesses and participants can undertake skills-based workshops and sample teaching from the curriculum.
This includes but not exhaustive to:
- Introduction to Composites
- Introduction to Resin Transfer Moulding
- Introduction to Resin Infusion
- Introduction to Design & Repair
- Further workshops to be identified
We will be offering an “What are Composites?” and the World of Composites and Innovation day. This will compromise a series of presentations from the South Devon College delivery team and specialist speakers in which there will be breakout and Q&A sessions.
The business and participant journey will initiate with a broad reaching, advice and guidance activity, to engage with businesses and participants in which they can attend workshops to gain skills and knowledge and are designed to support progression opportunities onto level 2, level 3 or higher-level courses and apprenticeships.
Participants will be fully supported throughout the programme with dedicated 1:1 on programme support offered to all participants, led by their expert subject tutor. On conclusion, the ILP will be reviewed by the tutor, reiterating the progression opportunities.
The project will be delivered to the traditional South Devon College catchment area, focusing on Torbay and South Devon, but extending to the area broadly south of the A38, between Plymouth and Exeter. The full range of SDC campuses will be available for project delivery, including the main Vantage Point campus, South West Energy Centre, the Hi-Tech and Digital Centre and the Noss Marine Academy. Subject to demand and volumes, should project activity be required by employers, we are also able to deliver at employers’ premises.
This programme will develop and be flexible as the business/participant market evolves and may extend beyond this initial offer in the fullness of time.
University of Exeter
The University of Exeter Q-Step Centre is going to deliver a series of training courses, which seeks to develop advanced data analytics skills. These are skills that are becoming increasingly adopted in a wide variety of areas by both small and large organisations.
The proposed curriculum for the programme is as follows:
- Essential Data Analysis skills- this involves introducing the participants to the principles of data analysis and the basics of statistical analysis.
- R for data analysis- this course aims to develop understanding and skills with R, which is specialised scripting language designed for conducting statistical analysis.
- Python for data analysis- this course is aimed at individuals who have never done any form of computer coding before. It introduces them to the nature of programming, and how to code in Python, before going on to show individuals how to use it for data analysis.
- Using web and text data- using Python, this course gives participants the opportunity to learn how to build Twitter and website scrapers, as well as the special methods required in order to analyse this kind of data.
- Machine learning and deep learning with Python- this course provides participant with the opportunity to learn the foundational principles of machine learning and to implement and train two classifiers: one for images and one for text.
