When Mason* first met with his CSW Community Engagement Adviser Suzanne, he did not know what he wanted to do, he just knew that he wanted to start earning his own money. After they exchanged phone calls and texts for a few days, he met with Suzanne. Together they discussed various options available in Plymouth, including support from Skills Launchpad Plymouth to find out local labour market demand information and discussed the possibility of attending a ‘job shop’ such as ‘Get into Health & Social Care’. They identified that Mason would benefit from retaking his English & Maths qualifications as this would open up more options. Mason agreed that an apprenticeship would be the most suitable route for him as he would be ‘earning whilst learning’. He wanted a job where he could help and look after people so during one of the advice sessions with Suzanne he researched and applied for an apprenticeship in a local care home. Suzanne was thrilled to hear from Mason a few days later where he told her that he was successful in securing the apprenticeship and excited to start his future in the caring sector.

As a Community Engagement Advisor, I am passionate about making a difference for young people, raising their aspirations, removing barriers, and enabling them to achieve the best possible outcome. I engage with young people, aged 16-19, in their own communities such as meeting them in local youth and community centres, as well as providing additional support by telephone/SMS services and on-line channels. I support young people to access education, employment, and training opportunities by providing advice and guidance as well as signposting and referring to various exciting projects.

There is something out there for every young person, it’s just a case of finding the right way to take the next step.
