Logan had very recently moved to the area. He was withdrawn from school on the advice of his GP as he was being emotionally affected by a situation at school. Mum saw the advertising outside of the Whitehead Ross Education and Consultancy office about an upcoming activity week they were running and emailed to see if Logan could enrol with the idea he might meet some new peers in this area. Mum was also worried as Logan had not been able to take his GCSE’s because of the situation at school. During the activity week Logan met some of the other participants and formed ongoing friendships. He also decided that he wanted to join the Whitehead Ross Education and Consultancy traineeships scheme to achieve his English and Maths primarily as he had no academic qualifications. He said he felt comfortable here more than anywhere else and had lost his confidence at school but felt happy to go there to get his qualifications. Logan is a keen and talented BMX rider, so they are looking at a work placement in a bike shop at the end of his traineeship and then hopefully an apprenticeship with The Cornwall Bicycle Project, where he can gain some coaching qualifications and make a career from his talent.

When Logan took part in the Whitehead Ross activity week, he gained 6 credits in employability skills as well as  forming some ongoing friendships. They did some teambuilding activities and it became clear how great he was with the other learners, a natural leader, he helped the others with their confidence, encouraging them to take part in activities which were perhaps outside their comfort zone. He’s also quite competitive and challenged himself frequently. The week’s activities enabled him to see the premises, meet the tutors and other participants and from this he gained the confidence to sign onto the traineeship scheme. We are hoping that he will not only gain his functional skills level 2 in Maths and English, but eventually make a career out of his passion and talent for cycling!

I moved to Cornwall recently and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I joined in with their activity week and had a lot of fun. They gave me the confidence to continue my studies with them, so I joined their COMPASS Project. I’ve now decided to join their traineeship scheme and they will help me get some work experience at a BMX park. They are giving me lots of help and support. I want to be a BMX coach, and they are great at encouraging me and putting me in touch with the right people. Rad!!”
